21st Century Education and Skills Mismatch

February 25th, 2014 by ProOrbis

There’s a mismatch between the skills that our nation’s education system is supplying and the skills that are demanded in the market, according to Joshua Sneideman, Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow at the Department of Energy, in a discussion with Defense News on America’s classrooms and improving science, technology, engineering and math education.

Teachers need to prepare their students to be problem solvers, critical thinkers, and team players to meet current and future demands of the economy. The common teaching methods that focus on memorizing facts, using PowerPoint slideshows, and expecting students to work alone more often than not are no longer cutting it, according to Mr. Sneideman. Students need to be equipped with skills in problem-solving, teamwork and conflict resolution in order to thrive in the 21st century work environment and become the makers of technology rather than just consumers of technology.
