ProOrbis Addresses Questions Related to its Role in CASIS

Philadelphia, PA – Recently, ProOrbis published a formal report addressing issues recently raised in the press with respect to its role in the development of the International Space Station (ISS) US National Laboratory Reference Model (Reference Model) and the formation of the non-profit corporation, the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS).

ProOrbis addressed the insinuation of a conflict of interest, which has been based on erroneous information that the ProOrbis Reference Model was the basis for NASA’s ISS National Lab Management Entity competitive solicitation (Cooperative Agreement Notice #NNH11SOMD002C). The Reference Model was not a part of the specifications set forth in the CAN, nor was it a solicitation requirement – making it permissible for any competing team to utilize for the competition but it was not required.  The report cites the Cooperative Agreement Notice document and NASA’s website, both which support and address the report’s claim: [for full text please visit: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/nlab/proorbis.html]

The other issue addressed was the concern that CASIS, a nonprofit corporation, would adversely impact its 501(c)(3) status by working with a private organization, ProOrbis.  According to the report, this concern was also proven unfounded after a comprehensive legal review was conducted to the satisfaction of CASIS back in December 2011.  In a recent SpaceNews.com article, CASIS and its acting chairman, Space Florida President Frank DiBello, confirmed that it is legal and appropriate for ProOrbis to act in the capacity of consultant to CASIS: [for full text please visit: http://www.spacenews.com/civil/120405ohio-delegation-calls-nasa-fire-iss-nonprofit.html]

The report goes on to state:  “As is clear from this report, these concerns were well known to be unfounded.  ProOrbis continues to fully support the original CASIS mission. The CASIS team proposal, as accepted by NASA, was designed to achieve the promise and potential of the ISS U.S. National Laboratory — to rekindle American’s pioneering spirit in space and bring to life the science and technology that can reshape our world”  [for full text please visit:http://proorbis.com/iss-u-s-national-laboratory-series/]
